"The reason for the death of three people is 'my love proposal didn't get a response' – Police"  

InEthiopia addis Ababa’s Lideta sub-city, District Six, near Karl Square, an individual killed two people and then took his own life at a branch of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, according to the Addis Ababa Police.  

Commander Markos Tadesse, the Addis Ababa Police Public Relations Officer, explained to BBC Amharic:  

"The incident occurred yesterday, Tuesday, March 2, 2017 E.C. (Ethiopian Calendar), between approximately 1:30 AM and 2:15 AM. The reason behind the deaths of three people was a *failure to receive a response to a love proposal*."  

Shiferaw Regassa, a security guard at the bank, had proposed to his coworker, Ms. Hana Tsegaye, a 32-year-old woman. After she did not reciprocate his feelings, he suspected she was in a romantic relationship with another coworker, Mr. Nguse Birhanu. In response, he killed both and then ended his own life.  

The guard committed the crime by replacing another security worker on duty, obtaining a firearm during the night shift. He waited for the victims to arrive for work.  

- First, he shot Mr. Nguse Birhanu twice, killing him.  

- Despite attempts to dissuade him, he proceeded to shoot Ms. Hana Tsegaye, who had reportedly rejected his proposal, after a 15-minute interval.  

- He then turned the weapon on himself.  

Three lives were lost in total. Police found photos suggesting a romantic relationship between Ms. Hana and Mr. Nguse, and investigations into their connection are ongoing.  

The Addis Ababa Police continue to investigate the incident.
